SmartRoam on Lantronix WiFi device servers

What Is Smartroam on Lantronix WiFi device servers, and how can I use it?

Smartroam is intended to be used on WiFi-enabled devices that may move around so that the WiFi connection must switch from one access point (AP) to another as the device moves.

I.e. a device mounted on a cart or vehicle may move around within a building, warehouse or even outside in something like a truck yard or on city streets, periodically losing communication with one AP and switching to another. Garden variety 802.11 doesn’t take care of the passing off of moving clients between access points very well; dropped connections or long delays are common.

Several years ago Lantronix development engineers decided to create a solution for this that was client based only and implemented it in the MatchPort family of modules. They called it SmartRoam, and it is now available on most Lantronix WiFi device servers including the MatchPort b/g. WiPort, WiBoxE and the new PremiereWave XN.

SmartRoam continuously tracks the signal strength of nearby access points and prevents any disruption in the wireless connection by proactively managing a smooth, automatic transition to the access point with the strongest signal. This provides enhanced mobility and ensures uninterrupted connectivity to the wireless network without degrading the application performance.

See the documentation for your Lantronix WiFi device server for information on how to enable and use it.
