Wireless range of Lantronix 802.11 Wireless Devices

What is the wireless range I can expect from Lantronix wireless devices?

According to the article below, "Wi-Fi networks have a range that's limited by the transmission power, antenna type, the location they're used in, and the environment.[1] A typical wireless router in an indoor point-to-multipoint arrangement using 802.11b or 802.11g and a stock antenna might have a range of 32 metres (105 ft)."

The article goes on to document the many factors that determine the maximum distance for wireless communication of the Lantronix 802.11 Wireless Devices. In our experience examples include:

  • Furniture
  • Buildings & Walls (concrete or frame)
  • Atmospheric conditions
  • Geographical terrain
  • Generators or other high noise equipment
  • Omni-directional antenna vs. Uni-directional antenna
  • The gain of the antenna
  • The data rate the Wireless Lantronix device is configured for (lower data rate = further distance)

Some references list a maximum 802.11 range of up to 300 feet (91 meters). More realistically the average reliable distance inside a building is 80-100 feet (24-30 meters). This will vary depending on the characteristics of the site.

In general the only way to know for sure how far apart 802.11 devices can communicate is to test the wireless devices you are planning to use at different locations at your site. This will allow you to determine if one or more 802.11 repeaters are required for full coverage.
