SLS Spider Input Power Requirements

What is the proper way to provide power to the SLS Spider?

The datasheet specifies the Spider requires 800mA for reliable continuous operation. We advise 850mA to include some margin for more demand during bootup or firmware upgrades.

An optional external PSU that provides 5Vdc at 1000mA to the Spider through the auxiliary mini-USB port is available for independent power. The Spider will remain available on the network and online when the host PC is rebooted, allowing KVM access to the host PC BIOS when its USB ports are not yet initialized. The part number for the optional external power supply is 520-085-R. See the "Order Info / Part #s" tab on this web page:

The Spider-USB model is designed to obtain power from both USB connectors connected to powered USB ports on the host (500mA x2).

The Spider-PS/2 model is designed to obtain power from both PS/2 connectors (250mA x2) + the USB connector.

In both above cases, there is at least 1000mA provided to the Spider in ideal conditions.

As mentioned, the Spider can also receive power from an auxiliary mini-USB power input. However, it is not treated as additional input power. An input-sensing switch switches from one input (USB or PS/2 connectors) to the other (aux mini-USB) to prevent overload. Once input power is detected on the auxiliary input port, then all power will be derived from this source, regardless of the amount of current.

The recommended way to connect the Spider on any platform is to provide input power on both PS/2 ports + USB connector to a powered USB port (for the PS/2 model), or both USB connectors connected individually to powered USB ports on the host PC (for the USB model).

It is recommended to use the Lantronix 520-085-R power supply if you choose to power the Spider from an external power source.

The Spider will operate unreliably if the incorrect amount of power and amperage are not supplied as recommended by Lantronix.
