Resetting the telnet password on UDS-SDS-CoBox devices

How do I reset the telnet password on my UDS/SDS/CoBox device if I have lost it?

One way to reset the incoming telnet password is to log into the unit's serial port and disable or change the incoming telnet password. Instructions for logging into each devices serial port are listed below. For multiport devices always use serial port 1 to log in to the devices configuration menu.

UDS/SDS/CoBox-E2/CoBox-FL devices:

1. Obtain a serial console cable to log into the units serial port.

On a UDS-10/100/1100 or SDS1100 device you will need to use a DB9 to DB25 modem cable (Lantronix part # 500-163) to log into the devices serial port. The pinout for a basic DB9 to DB25 modem cable is below.

DB9F - DB25M

2 - 3
3 - 2
5 - 7

On a UDS2100 or SDS2100 device you will need to use a DB9 to DB9 null-modem cable (Lantronix part # 500-164) to log into the devices serial port. The pinout for a basic DB9 to DB9 null-modem cable is below.

DB9F - DB9F

2 - 3
3 - 2
5 - 5

2. Attach the DB9 female side of the modem cable to the DB9 com port on your PC. Attach the DB25 male side of the modem cable to the UDS/SDS/CoBox device.

3. Open HyperTerminal by clicking the Windows Start button and selecting Programs, Accessories, Communications, HyperTerminal.

4. Once the "Connection Description" window of HyperTerminal loads, type in a name for the session and click OK.

5. In the "Connect To" window of HyperTerminal click on the "Connect Using" drop down box to select the com port the modem cable is attached to. Click the OK button.

6. In the "COM Properties" window set the bits per second to 9600, Data bits to 8, Parity to None, Stop bits to 1, and Flow Control to None. This can be done with one click by clicking on "Restore Defaults" button. Click the OK button.

7. You should now have a blank HyperTerminal window open. With this window open, hold down a LOWER CASE x key and power cycle the Lantronix device.

8. If your cable and serial port settings are correct you will see a message saying "Press Enter To Go Into Setup Mode". You must press enter within 3 seconds or the Lantronix device will reboot and you will need to log in again.

9. After pressing enter a menu will be displayed. At the "Your Choice" prompt select "Option 0" for "Server Configuration".

10. After selecting option 0 press enter until you reach the prompt "Change Telnet Configuration Password?". At this prompt type "Y".

11. At the "Enter new Password" prompt you can disable the telnet password by pressing enter without entering a new password or you can change the password by entering the new password.

12. Hit enter until you reach the configuration menu. At the menu enter option 9 to save and exit.
