I Forgot My Telnet & Web Manager Password On XPort, UDS1100, XPress-DR or other CoBos device server.

How do I recover an XPort, UDS1100, XPress-DR or other CoBos device server if the telnet password is unknown?

To recover an unknown or forgotten password on your embedded or external Lantronix serial server, use Device Installer to save setup record 0 from a unit with a known telnet password or a unit without a password. You will also use Device Installer to load this setup record 0 to the embedded or external Lantronix serial server for which you do not know the password.

Use the method described below.

1. Have the unit with the known password and the unit you need to recover on the same local subnet.

2. Use Device Installer on a PC from the same local subnet to search for both serial servers.

3. Highlight the found serial server, with the known password or no password, in Device Installer and open the "File" drop down, click on Save Setup Records..., click the box for Setup Record 0 and click Save. Name the file and save it to the desktop or your favorite place to store files.

4. Next, highlight the serial server with the unknown or forgotten password in Device Installer.

5. Click on the upgrade icon in Device Installer.

6. Select "Create a custom installation" and Click next.

7. Then click next again to go to the next page.

8. Select "Install setup records from a file" and browse to where you stored the saved setup record 0, highlight that file and click "open". Then click next.

9. Then, click next again to start the transfer of setup record 0 to the unit that has the forgotten or unknown password.

You will see the process of the file transfer and that it succeeds. Once this is completed successfully, you will now be able to access the serial server with the forgotten or unknown password. This process will either change the password to one you know or clear the password to none.

Alternative process for an External Serial Server

If you have an External Lantronix serial server with a DB9 or DB25 port you can access the configuration menu via a serial interface. From a com port on a PC use a modem cable (straight through pinout) to connect to a Lantronix serial server with a DB25 serial port. Use a null modem cable (cross tx to rx pinout) to connect to a Lantronix serial server with a DB9 serial port.

Access the configuration menu by following the steps below.

1. Open hyperterminal (or another emulation program) using port settings of 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit and flow control none.

2. After the session is open to these settings, power cycle the Lantronix serial server and at the same time hold the "x" key (lower case) on your keyboard while powering up.

3. When you are prompted, hit enter to access the menu choices (timeout is 4 seconds).

At this point you have two choices. One is to clear the password to none or reconfigure a password you want.

To clear the password;

4. Type 7 for "Defaults", then enter.

5. Type 9 for "Save and Exit", then enter.

To change the password;

4. Type 0 for the "Server", then enter.

5. Continue to enter until you reach the choice for "Change telnet config password (N) ? - type Y

6. Enter new Password: xxxx (xxxx = the new password you want, 4 characters)

7. You are now back at "Your choice ?

8. Type 9 for "Save and Exit"

You will now be able to access the External serial server with either no password or with the new password you configured.
