Calculating host bits for CoBos subnet mask

How do I calculate the host bits for configuring the subnet mask on a CoBos product?


Use the chart at the bottom of this FAQ to choose the correct number of host bits to enter in the CoBos menu interface for the subnet mask required on the network.

To configure this setting, connect the correct type of serial cable (either modem or null modem) from a com port on your PC to the serial port on the CoBos product. See the serial pinout information in the User Guide to determine if you need a modem cable or a null modem cable.

Set your emulation port settings to 9600, 8 data bits, no parity, one stop bit & no flow control.

Once the emulation session is started, power cycle the CoBox product while holding the "x" key (lower case) on your keyboard. When you see the information about the product hit enter to access the menu. Do this within 3 seconds or it will time out and your will need to repeat the process.

You will be prompted with the menu selections:

Change Setup:
0 Server
1 Channel 1
5 Expert
6 Security
7 Factory defaults
8 Exit without save
9 Save and exit Your choice ?

  • Select 0, for the server configuration and hit enter.
  • IP Address : (Enter your IP Address in dotted quotation - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx & ignore what you see in parenthesis), then enter
  • Set Gateway IP Address (N) ? (enter Y, then enter your gateway IP Address in dotted quotation - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx & ignore what you see in parenthesis), then enter
  • Netmask : Number of host bits for Host Part (0 = default) (0) (enter the number of host bits you selected from the chart below for the correct subnet mask), then enter
  • Change telnet config password (N) ? N (if you do not want a password, Y if you do and enter a 4 character password), then enter
  • Type 9 for save and exit, then enter.
