Spider – Keyboard and Mouse not working on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and 4

I have a new server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 or 4. I can get into the BIOS on the server with the Spider. I can access GRUB with the Spider. However, once the OS is booted up, I can no longer use the keyboard and mouse. I have the same OS loaded on some older servers and they work fine.

If the newer servers are equipped with USB 2.0 ports and the older ones are equipped with USB 1.1, the problem may relate to a kernel issue in your version of Linux. Both Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 3 and 4 had different kernel issues that resulted in the same behavior. Both related to issues when connecting a USB 2.0 HID component to a USB 2.0 port. Both were corrected by upgrading the kernel to the latest update.

See the Red Hat website  for information on upgrading your kernel.
