xPrintServer displays the blinking “Code 1” light when connected to a Cisco Ethernet switch

The xPrintServer's orange LED "X" is blinking once with a pause in between blinks. The xPrintServer device cannot be found on the network when connected through a switch. Can anything be done to fix this?

The blinking LED "X" indicates "Code 1," which means the xPrintServer is not able to obtain a DHCP IP Address from the network DHCP server and has timed out. This can be caused by a number of reasons.

The most common reason is the switch port the xPrintServer is connected on does not link with the xPrintServer in time to obtain the DHCP IP address on boot which causes the xPrintServer to time out.

In our testing Lantronix has found that enabling a Spanning Tree setting on network switches called "Portfast" alleviates this issue. Portfast is a Cisco exclusive term for Cisco's hardware; but this solution can be put into effect on most switches.

Enabling Portfast puts the network port into a forwarding mode immediately, which drastically decreases the listening/learning times, allowing the IP Address to be assigned almost immediately. Below is an article written by Cisco that details enabling Portfast on Cisco switches.

As stated, Portfast is a Cisco exclusive term but this solution is an option that can be put into effect on most managed network switches. The feature may be called Forwarding Mode or Priority. Forwarding Mode should have the same effect as Portfast, allowing the xPrintServer to obtain an IP address immediately.
