In this example, we are using color printing versus black and white printing as the default setting for the printer. One can use this example in combination with with answer# 1710 - How to Manually Add a Printer to the xPrintServer - to set up two printer profiles for the same printer in the xPrintServer - one for black and white printing, the other for color printing.
Things to bear in mind:
- Configuring default printer options is more effective with PostScript drivers than with PCL drivers.
- Based on Technical Support's observations and many field tests, PostScript drivers tend to honor almost all of the available settings in the driver but tend to be slower performing compared to PCL.
- On the other hand, PCL drivers are relatively lightweight and faster printing, but honor very few of the available option settings available in the driver.
- Almost all of the printer drivers in the driver database are tested and determined by Lantronix Engineering to be the best performing open source driver available for the printer. If a certain printer model was provisioned by the xPrintServer with a PCL driver, causing some available default option settings to be not honoured, then changing a working driver for this model might not be an option as it will affect all users using the same printer.
That being said, it may still be worthwhile to contact Lantronix Technical Support to investigate the possibility of posting a PostScript driver for such model printer, pending Engineering's final determination.
