Resetting UDS, XPort-03-04s and similar products to factory defaults

How can I set a UDS1100 and similar products to factory defaults?

This answer applies to Lantronix CoBos IoT modules/gateways including UDS, SDS, XPress-DR, XPress-DR+, WiBox, XPort-03/04/05, xPico (not xPico WiFi), MatchPort b/g, MatchPort-NR, Minis and Micros.

The Lantronix part number for a serial console cable for IoT gateways with a DB25F DCE RS232 serial connector is 500-163.

The Lantronix part number for a serial console cable for IoT gateways with DB9M DTE RS232 serial connectors is 500-164.

The wiring for these cables is shown in this article:

RS232 Serial Cable Wiring

The UDS1100 is used as an example.

You can set everything except the network configuration back to factory defaults by logging into the UDS's text based Setup Mode through the serial port and choosing option 7, Factory defaults.  I.e.:

  • connect a serial console cable from the Com port (or USB-to-serial adapter) on a PC to the serial port on the UDS (this cable ships with the UDS1100)
  • run a terminal emulator connected to the Com port, e.g. HyperTerminal, TeraTerm Pro, PuTTY, etc.
  • set the terminal emulator to communicate at 9600, 8N1, no flow control.  This is the serial configuration the UDS uses at boot time.
  • remove power from the UDS1100
  • hold down the 'X' key while applying power to the UDS1100
  • press Enter within 3 seconds of seeing the "Press Enter for Setup Mode" prompt
  • type 7 to set everything except network settings to factory defaults
  • type 0 and make any necessary changes to the network settings
    • change the "IP address" to 0.0.0.0
    • change the "Gateway IP address" to 0.0.0.0
    • change the "Number of Bits for the Host Part" to 0
    • change the "DNS Server IP addr" to 0.0.0.0
    • set "Change Telnet/Web Manager password" to N
  • type 9 to save your changes and exit

For other Lantronix device servers, see the QuickStart Guide and/or "Configuring Using Telnet or the Serial Port" section of the User Guide for information on the serial cable to use in the above procedure.  Quick Start and User Guides are available from:

http://www.lantronix.com/support/documentation.html

For instance, at this writing configuring a UDS1100 from the serial port is documented starting on page 37 of the UDS1100 User Guide.

Warning: To access Setup Mode through the serial port, embedded device servers must be installed in a demo board or some other circuit that supplies an RS232 serial connector for the first serial port on the device server.

DO NOT directly connect the serial interface of an embedded device server to the Com port on a PC or any other RS232 serial interface. Doing so will destroy the embedded device server. This is not covered by the warranty.

Alternative ways to assigning an IP address on a UDS1100 are documented starting on page 76 of the UDS1100 User Guide and in the "Assigning an IP address to a CoBos product" FAQ.

If you can't log in through the serial port for some reason please try the "ARP & Telnet" method on page 77 of the UDS1100 User Guide and in the "Assigning an IP address to a CoBos product " FAQ.

Note1:
There are some network configurations that do not allow the arp & telnet method to work. E.g. if the IP address of the UDS is the same as the broadcast address of the network the UDS will not be accessable via the network. If arp/telnet does not work the only way to re-configure the IP address is to log in through the serial port.

Note2:
Some of the products listed above have a Reset button. This button cannot be used to set a product back to factory defaults. It's only function is to reboot the device server.
