xPrintServer – A Workaround for Brother BR-Script3 Printers that Print slowly

My Brother printer takes a long time to print through the xPrintServer. Are there any adjustments possible to make it print faster?

This FAQ is only for the Cloud Print Edition. The Office Edition of the xPrintServer only supports Postscript printers now.

A good number of Brother Printers in our supported list, for the Cloud Print edition, use the BR-Script3 driver by default. For a supported printers list please click Here.

BR-Script3 is Brother's version of PostScript. Like PS, it is a very full-featured and consequently heavy printing language. As a general rule, heavy printing languages take more processing time to process.

While printing from a computer to a Brother printer is fast and with a whole breadth of available printing features, printing can slow significantly when printing by means of an xPrintServer, which does not have the processor and memory resources of a PC or a Mac.

Fortunately, a number of these BR-Script3 printers support PCL6. In contrast to BR-Script3, PCL (Printer Command Language) is a lightweight printing language and is generally faster to process, speeding up print speeds for many printer models that support PCL.

For Brother Printer models that support PCL6, we suggest the following steps to speed up printing.

  • Update the xPrintServer to the latest firmware from the Admin->Firmware page in the web configuration interface.
    • If you require help with the upgrade process please check out information on our xPrintServer Forums.

  • Modify your Brother Printer profile to use a Lantronix xPrintServer Universal [monochrome|color] PCL driver.
    • Procedure to Modify Printer Driver to Other Compatible Driver
      • Log into the xPrintServer
      • Browse to Printers > Advanced
      • Click the 'Advanced Print Options' button
      • Click on the entry for your Brother MFC-9430CN printer
      • In the 'Administration' drop-down box, select 'Modify Printer'
      • In the next page, keep the connection settings (don't change anything).
      • Click Continue.
      • In the next page, you can modify the value for 'Description' and 'Location' to be your choice. These values are what are advertised to your iOS device as the Name and Location of the printer.
      • Click Continue.
      • In the next page, use the following values for the printer Make and Model.

        Make = Lantronix
Model = Lantronix xPrintServer Universal Color PCL or PCL-XL Driver (if a color printer)
        Or
Model = Lantronix xPrintServer Universal Monochrome PCL or PCL-XL (if a black-and-white printer)

Note: Unless you know your printer supports PCL-XL you'll probably have better luck with the PCL driver.

When the process completes, send a print job from your iOS device to verify if printing speeds improve to your Brother printer.
